Elodie Jacques, Magnus Penny, and Nora Weirig from Lycée Ermesinde won the first prize in the 14-16 age category at national qualifications of the European Statistics Competition with their research paper “The Future of our Education” comparing digital AI supported learning and team-based learning. This competition is organized by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, and aims to promote students’ curiosity and interest in statistics. The ESC is aimed at secondary school students, who challenge each other by solving statistical exercises, hunting for information and producing analyses.

First national, then European, this competition invites each participating team to work in groups to test their theoretical knowledge, to take an interest in the data produced by the actors of official statistics and to discover or rediscover their societal stake!

The Future of our Education  comparing digital AI supported and team-based learning

Our survey investigates the differences between digital and traditional learning. Two classes of the same age participated: one worked alone on computers, while the other worked in groups using anything but electronic devices.

They did so in English, Social Studies, and Maths, with 125 minutes of introduction to the topic (with additional exercises) and a 45-minute test we created.

To highlight this contrast of learning methods, our image shows one person working individually on a computer and two pupils working together with books. The background underlines this contrast without favoring either side.

After grading, we noticed a small difference: traditional learning scored 2.9 points higher on average (E-Learning: 17.9, Class Learning: 20.8).

After comparing both methods, we concluded that they each have their strengths and weaknesses. So, our ideal future would need the best of both worlds.
